Empowering Homeowners: Strengthening the Middle Class, Boosting Property Values, and Promoting Green Energy

Our community is in the midst of a housing crisis. The rising cost of living and unaffordable childcare has created an unsustainable burden for our middle class. Many of our neighbors have found themselves taking on extra jobs to make ends meet as the middle class continues to shrink. The middle class was once the economic norm of a majority of American adults.

According to a new Pew Research Center Analysis of Government Data spanning over the last five decades, the number of adults who live in middle-class households fell from 61% in 1971 to 50% in 2021. The shrinking middle class has been accompanied by an increase of adults entering the upper-income tier – from 14% in 1971 to 21% in 2021 – as well as an increase in the share who are in the lower-income tier, from 25% to 29%.

In the dynamic landscape of NY-11, the call to strengthen the middle class and enhance homeownership opportunities resonates deeply. Recognizing the pivotal role that homeowners play in the island's economic fabric, there's a pressing need to focus on initiatives that elevate property values, provide incentives for homeownership, and champion green energy solutions. It is time to redefine our approach to housing.

When I go to Washington, I will advocate for:

  1. 1. Community Development: Homeownership is not just about having a place to call home; it's an investment in the community's prosperity. A robust middle class hinges on the stability and growth of property values. By implementing strategic initiatives, we aim to fortify the foundation of Staten Island's real estate market.

    1. a. Incentivize Property Improvements: Encourage homeowners to invest in their properties through tax incentives and rebates for energy-efficient upgrades, beautification projects, and infrastructure enhancements.

    2. b. Community Development Programs: Foster community-led initiatives that focus on improving public spaces, parks, and neighborhood amenities.

  2. 2. Green Energy Solutions: Fostering a commitment to green energy not only benefits the environment but also positions NY-11 homeowners as pioneers in sustainable living.

    1. a. Solar Incentive Programs: Implement incentives for homeowners to adopt solar energy solutions, reducing utility costs and contributing to the island's overall sustainability goals.

    2. b. Energy-Efficient Home Upgrades: Encourage energy-efficient renovations by providing tax credits or subsidies for homeowners investing in eco-friendly appliances, insulation, and smart home technologies.

    3. c. Community Gardens and Green Spaces: Support initiatives that transform underutilized spaces into community gardens and green areas, enhancing neighborhood appeal and fostering a sense of environmental responsibility.

  3. 3. Maintaining Existing Infrastructure: I will improve the state of our infrastructure, including our public housing to ensure that they are in suitable living conditions for all who reside in them. Making a push to implement green energy for its residents and to ensure that maintenance is performed in a timely matter.

  4. 4. Property Tax Relief for Middle-Class Homeowners: I will advocate for policies that provide property tax relief for middle-class homeowners. Reducing the financial burden associated with homeownership is a pivotal step in creating an environment where families can thrive and plan for their future with confidence.

By championing these initiatives, we can empower NY-11 homeowners, strengthen the middle class, and create a community that thrives economically, environmentally, and socially. Together, we can build a future where every homeowner plays a pivotal role in shaping the resilient and sustainable landscape of NY-11.
